Key area 2Strengthening the WHS Management System This key area focuses on establishing a consistent, well managed WHS Management System which supports best practice. The system will encompass effective hazard and incident management, reviewing, auditing, and reporting. We will review efficacy and recommend improvements. The system aligns with the requirements of AS/NZS 4801:2001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems and will enable you to achieve certification against this standard, a feature of best practice organisations. Key features of the WHS Management System will include: • Provision of information to assist the leaders to manage changing legislative requirements; • Training of key groups to improve the capability of the workforce; • Ongoing review of resourcing; • Auditing the systems; • Hazard management gaps for workplace substances and dangerous goods and contractor management; and • Engaging occupational physicians to provide advice on prevention strategies. safety is a risk based processKEY AREA 4
Targeting Key Injury Areas Consistent with the approach throughout the WHS Strategy of targeting priority areas of greatest risk, for example, Manual Tasks (Handling). Injuries as a result of strains and sprains most commonly associated with manual tasks are the highest injury type accounting for the most amount of time lost from work. A key focus of the manual task risk reduction is the development of a comprehensive manual task system. • Slips/Trips/Falls In general, the second highest category of injury may be to slips, trips and falls. The focus can be on developing engineering and administrative solutions as part of a comprehensive system development. • Workplace Stress and Adverse Workplace behaviour There is an emerging trend of an increasing incidence of exposure to psychological hazards resulting in adverse outcomes. A focus on skills development will provide assistance in this challenging area of risk. |
key area 3Cultural Change This key area aims to establish a culture which supports best practice in occupational health and safety. It is the foundation of the strategy and is influenced by gaining valuable information about the current state of the WHS culture. We can conduct a Safety Perception Survey with the employees and gain information to provide a benchmark for the future and determine how to prioritise processes and issues that need the most improvement. Cultural change strategies, which will incorporate the principles of best practice in occupational health and safety, will include: • Divisional WHS operational plans • Key performance indicators • Senior leadership development • Achievement of external recognition of best practice such as; - WorkSafe Recognition Awards - Conformance with National Self Insurance - Audits >90% - Certification against AS/NZS 4801:2001 Workplace Health and Safety Management Systems • Key partnerships • Core mandatory training and competencies Key Area 5Injury Management This key area aims to minimise the impact of injuries on employees, their families, work colleagues and the community. Programs and interventions will continuously improve the way we address issues and barriers to achieving effective, timely and meaningful return to work. Both managers and employees will be involved in ensuring proactive, caring injury management and rehabilitation of all injured employees. The priorities in this area will be: • Early intervention; and • Standardised support across the organisation to optimise the care of employees. KEY AREA 6 Workplace Wellness No doubt, a number of initiatives are already in place to manage the wellbeing and wellness of employees. We will build on the learning’s of these initiatives and encourage everyone in the organisation to act in a way which protects their own and their fellow employees’ psycho/physiological health and wellbeing. The focus in this area should include a wide range of programs and supporting activities designed to enhance wellness, concentrating on areas such as healthy lifestyle and a safe work place. |
